Nevada Yesterdays

Howard Cannon - Part 3

Listen

Cannon with President Gerald Ford. This month on Nevada Yesterdays, we've been hearing about the political life of Howard Cannon.

Last time we focused on his first term as a U.S. Senator. He went on to serve three more terms. From bringing in funding to Nevada airports and deregulating airlines to bringing water to Southern Nevada via the Colorado River, his accomplishments were many. He remained in office until 1982 when the political tide began to turn and was beat in a major upset by Republican Chic Hecht.

He remained involved in politics an his name was not forgotten in Las Vegas where the McCarran International Airport's aviation museum is named for him.

Our essays are written by Michael Green, professor at the College of Southern Nevada. Nevada Yesterdays is funded by the Nevada Humanities and dedicated to the memory of Frank Wright.
