The 1962 Election, Part II

Listen

Paul LaxaltA 1962 election in Nevada still resonates through the Silver State's political scene. In our last installment, we talked about the death, half a century ago, of Rex Bell who was running for governor of Nevada. What followed would change Nevada.

Bell's running-mate, Paul Laxalt (pictured right), stayed on to run for lieutenant governor with Grant Sawyer to be governor. The race generated much excitement and would have ramifications well into the future. The son of a Basque shepherd, Laxalt also eventually went on to serve as governor and two terms as United States Senator. He also had become close friends with Ronald Reagan during both their stints as governor, and later became known as "The First Friend" during Reagan's presidency.

Hear more about Reagan's relationship with Laxalt on Nevada Yesterdays: Ronald Reagan: Part I.
