Golden Rainbow is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping southern Nevadans infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Since its founding in 1987, Golden Rainbow remains the only AIDS service organization (ASO) in Nevada to offer permanent housing for low-income HIV/AIDS-affected individuals and families. Golden Rainbow also may provide direct financial assistance, which means that if a client needs a check today for an emergency, Golden Rainbow can provide that check today. Golden Rainbow also funds prevention education programs.

Golden Rainbow owns two four-unit apartment complexes and a three-bedroom home, and despite the stereotype of AIDS, all Golden Rainbow housing is currently occupied by families. In addition to its housing, Golden Rainbow directly assists more than 600 individuals each year.

Golden Rainbow works side-by-side with other ASOs in the city, including Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN), Caminar, Nevada Association of Latin Americans (NALA) and St. Therese Center. Because Golden Rainbow does no case management, it relies on other ASOs for service referrals. That's where Golden Rainbow's slogan comes in - ''When no one else can, we can.'' When other ASOs have exhausted their abilities and/or finances to help clients, Golden Rainbow acts as a safety net, ensuring that those who need help, get exactly the help they need.

Golden Rainbow was founded in 1987 by a group of dancers after one of their own died from AIDS while living in his brother's garage. They joined hands and vowed something like that would never happen in this city ever again. To raise money, they staged a fundraising production show, which is now known as the ''Ribbon of Life'' stage spectacular. Held each June, the show is Golden Rainbow's primary source of funding, and 100 percent of the proceeds stay in southern Nevada. Because Golden Rainbow has only two paid staff members, the overwhelming majority of funds raised directly benefit those in need.
