The Assistance League of Las Vegas is made up entirely of volunteers. More than 300 members volunteer over 32,000 hours per year to help members of the community directly. Organized in 1976, the Las Vegas Chapter is part of the National Assistance League.

Listen to these Community Connections profiles with Real Player.

League programs include:

Operation School Bell-Each year, 4,000 homeless and disadvantaged children receive a new basic wardrobe-jeans, shoes, underwear, socks, winter jacket and health kit-through this Assistance League program. Referrals are made by the Clark County School District. Follow up shows that children who are provided adequate clothing have a greater incentive for regular school attendance, higher academic performance and enhanced self-esteem.

The Kids On the Block-Working with the Clark County School District, trained teams of puppeteers help children confront issues of mental, physical and emotional disabilities and cultural problems of divorce, drugs and gangs. Using large puppets to present educational and entertaining skits to third graders, performances began in 1992 and have benefited thousands of children.

Operation Hug-Teddy Bears became standard equipment in 1988 in patrol cars of the Metropolitan Police Department though this program of the Assistance League. When an officer comes in contact with a lost, frightened or traumatized child, the comfort found in a teddy bear will often calm fears so that the officer can help.

ASK (Assault Survivor Kits)-Containing toiletries and other essentials that help victims maintain dignity was they begin the recovery process, kits are provided to Community Action Against Rape and Sunrise Children's Hospital project, and to Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect.

ASSISTEENS Auxiliary-For girls and young women in grades eight through 12, this program teachings leadership skills through philanthropic work. Members research and coordinate their own service projects and finance them entirely by their own fundraising.

Desert Sage Auxiliary-Designed for members of the community who do not have day-time discretionary hours, the auxiliary complements the fundraising and philanthropic projects of the Chapter.
