DESERT BLOOM - Trees Around Town

Listen

Taking care of desert plants starts right away -- even for large plants. Palms should be untied right after planting which helps to start producing food for their root systems as well as strengthening their trunks against the strong desert winds.

Any tree planted into the ground (or sidewalk) should have a hole no deeper than the root ball, but three to five times its diameter.

If you're interested in planting for conservation or maybe creating a wildlife habitat, the Nevada Division of Forestry has a tree nursery at Floyd Lamb Park: Las Vegas State Tree Nursery.

There is also a desert plant sale going on throughout October, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8am to 3pm at the College of Southern Nevada native plant nursery on Charleston Boulevard.
