Hoover Dam and bridgeWe are used to Hoover Dam being a big tourist draw, but there was a time when that aspect of the dam was unexpected.

It was seventy-five years ago September thirtieth that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt came here to dedicate what was then called Boulder Dam. As Michael Hiltzick, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times reporter and author of a new book on Hoover Dam, called Colossus: Hoover Dam and the Making of the American Century, "Roosevelt hoped that his appearance at the edge of the Colorado River gorge would eradicate from public memory the project's decades-long gestation under three Republican presidents and transform it into a visible symbol of the New Deal."
