The Russells: Part I

Listen

Among the families who've influenced the future of Nevada are the Russells, go back several generations.

From Judge James Todd Russell based in Carson City who has handed down some significant rulings lately, to former Nevada Governor Charles Hinton Russell, this family has left its mark on Nevada's past.

The Marjorie Russell Clothing and Textile Research Center was named for Marjorie Russell, daughter of State District Court Judge Clark Guild. The museum is a study center for understanding historic costumes and textiles. It was created in 1992 under the direction of the Nevada State Museum and Nevada Historical Society. Its purpose is to enhance the awareness of fashion history as it relates to society, history, and material culture.

KNPR's State of Nevada last year featured the museum's exhibit, Unmentionables on Display.

Charles Hinton Russell, who held a number of major jobs including Governor of Nevada, was one of the most influential of Russells. Learn more about him in the next installment...

Our essays are written by Michael Green, professor at the College of Southern Nevada. Nevada Yesterdays is funded by the Nevada Humanities and dedicated to the memory of Frank Wright.
