Number Of Hispanic College Students Increasing

Listen
AIR DATE: June 11, 2013

Hispanic students are enrolling in college at a higher rate than in previous years. According to a new study from the PEW Hispanic Center Last year, nearly 70 percent of Hispanic high school grads enrolled in college.

That’s slightly more than the 67 percent white grads who enrolled in college last year. And the high school drop-out rate among Hispanic student is also down. The authors of the study say there may be a number of economic and cultural factors that have led to this change.

GUEST

Richard Fry, one of the authors of the Pew study

COMMENTS:
The terms Latino and Hispanic are used interchangeably in this report. Unless otherwise noted, the terms whites, blacks, and Asians include both the Hispanic and the non-Hispanic components of their populations - From the Pew Study referenced,http://www.pewhispanic.org/2013/05/09/hispanic-high-school-graduates-pass-whites-in-rate-of-college-enrollment/ Just have to dig a little.

Is the inference then that Hispanics are "Non-white"? Hispanics are a cultural ethnicity not a racial group. Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, et al, are all shades of skin color; some are even blue-eyed blonds. In fact, most Latinos (excepting largely Puerto Ricans and Cubans of African origin) ARE Caucasian. The correct distinction should be "Anglo-European", or simply "Anglo", NOT "White". Your ignorance on this subject is both appalling and offensive.
