What You Need To Know About The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act or Obamacare is still creating plenty of political debate, but  the health care and health insurance industries are getting ready for the big change. New policies are on sale October 1 and everyone will need insurance by January 1, 2014. Our guests will tell you what you need to know.

How Much Will It Cost?

Although costs of the plan won’t be officially rolled out until September 1st, C.J. Bawden of Silver State Exchange had a ball park scenario.

“If we take a family of four that makes $47,000 a year and lives in the Las Vegas Valley, they’re going to receive a subsidy that will reduce their cost for the second lowest price insurance, the Silver Plan on Nevada Health Link,” says Bawden. “A family of four would pay $250 per month under the second lowest cost plan.”

Can I Keep My Current Plan?

“You may keep your insurance if you’re happy with your insurance,” says Bawden. “You can see different types of health plans that are offered in the market and make your choice. If you qualify for a subsidy it will make health insurance more affordable.

Are The Rules Set In Stone?

Even though the specifics of the Affordable Care Act are announced in September, and the plan goes into effect in January, don’t expect all the rules and regulations to be fully evolved by that point.

 “When we passed Medicaid during the Johnson years and the Great Society years, there were, following that, quite a number of amendments and regulatory changes,” says Bill Donahue, CEO of Nevada Health Co-op. “I don’t suspect this will be any different.

    There are many ways to lower cost .. and drs and hospitals will be encouraged though compensation to create a healthier population. As to your "provider" I imagine there will be an increase in Nurse Practitioners as not every visit requires a doctor .. there are lots of incentives for employers to offer insurance and it is a co-pay system as otherwise people tend to be wasteful, meaning it will be cheaper to see the nurse rather than wait to go to the ER ... Change is uncomfortable .. but I believe this will be a great improvement, especially for those who have nothing And the regulations are already reigning in the obscene waits and profits

    I think the two most important things we all need to understand about the "Affordable Care Act" are that it will in no way be "affordable", and that the "care" will be poor at best. I have no doubt that history will prove me correct in this.

    For the couple that was considering marriage and only one of the couple had income, would it be cheaper not to get married and have the person with no income apply for Medicare? Second you stated age and smoking will effect the premium rate, Then will of factors such as obesity and diabetes or other diseases or conditions effect the rate for the insured?

    Re: Insurance rebates. In the case of a company that provides insurance coverage for employees, but family coverage is an option that the employees must pay themselves - are rebates available to help cover the cost of adding and paying for family coverage, or is the only option (as far as receiving rebates for family coverage) to "drop" the company insurance & sign up with the state exchange?

    I work and have insurance through my employer. My girlfriend and I have been dating for 5 years with no plans to marry soon. She is unemployed and I support her fully. I am allowed to claim her on my fed taxes. Is she required to get insurance?
