Las Vegas Sun: To Be Or Not To Be
Las Vegas Sun: To Be Or Not To Be

Listen
AIR DATE: August 21, 2013

Brian Greenspun, publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, is fighting three siblings to preserve the legacy of his father, Hank Greenspun, who founded the Sun in 1950. To keep the paper going, Brian Greenspun has filed an anti-trust suit, claiming that a competitor, Stephens Media -- which owns the Las Vegas Review-Journal -- is trying to silence the Sun forever by buying it out. Hank Greenspun's other three children have agreed to the deal, which would close down the Sun in exchange for giving the Greenspuns ownership of the Internet "url" lasvegas.com, which Greenspun Media currently leases from Stephens Media.

Since 1989, the family-owned Sun newspaper has been in a legal agreement in which it continues to publish while the Las Vegas Review-Journal absorbs the cost of printing and distributing the Sun. In 2005 the Sun's owners and Stephens Media, which owns the R-J, renegotiated details of their joint operating agreement, which was supposed last through the end of 2040.
