A jury found a man accused of rape not guilty after his defense attorneys presented evidence that the district attorney's office had paid witnesses for meetings, and then destroyed receipts of that payment. For more than 20 years, the District Attorney's office has paid witnesses for pre-trial meetings, for travel and travel expenses. But the issue has recently come under scrutiny in high profile cases. Is it a good idea to compensate witnesses for their time, or has the practice compromised the judicial process?
