Nevada Yesterdays: The Repeal Of Prohibition, 80 Years Ago

Listen
AIR DATE: December 5, 2013

In the depths of the Depression in 1933, there was one small ray of light: Prohibition was repealed.

There were still a few barriers keeping Las Vegans from their booze, however. For example, there were no bartenders around who remembered how to tap beer kegs.

Although the day of repeal was a fun time for all, the police reported no arrests for gross intoxication.

Today we celebrate 80 years of legally popping corks and shaking martinis. Listen to historian Frank Wright’s 2000 essay on the subject for Nevada Yesterdays.
