Printing Ethnicity

Listen
AIR DATE: July 30, 2009

Newspapers often struggle with the decision on whether or not to print the ethnicity of crime suspects. And cries of racial profiling can sometimes come from those crime stories. Meanwhile the entire country has seen the issue of racial profiling spark national debate after a prominent black Harvard professor was arrested in his own home. We tackle the issue of printing ethnicity in newspapers with Review Journal Managing Editor, Charles Zobelland El Tiempo Reporter, Michelle Booth. We are also joined by UNLV Anthropology and Ethnic Studies Professor Rainier Spencer, and Al Tompkins, he teaches journalism ethics at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.
