Political activists in Nevada are using Arizona's controversial S.B. 1070 as a catalyst to engage Latino voters in the Silver State for the November election. The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada has started a voter registration drive aimed specifically at Latinos who oppose an Arizona style immigration law coming to Nevada. A 2008 study authored by UNLV Professor, John Tuman says despite large increases in the Latino population of Nevada and Clark County, voter registration and turnout among Latinos has not kept pace with the group's population growth.

So will the controversy in Arizona be enough to move Nevada's Latinos to the voting booth? We talk with John Tuman and a pollster who focuses specifically on Latino voting trends about how the issue of immigration might impact the mid-term elections.

    COMMENTS:
I was just reading recently about the suffragettes who fought for the vote, FOUGHT TO VOTE! I have always felt that there is not a need to encourage people to get out and vote. If they don't care enough, I don't want them voting--regardless of their ethnicity. And by the way, this "Latino" based conversation is indeed racist. Of the Latino population, you have generally those who are US Citizens, Americans, like your caller stated he was, and you have illegals. Why are you lumping every Latino as a Latino? Who cares what color their skin is or where they are from? Are they United States-ians? or are they citizens from another country? Stop driving a bigger wedge between the races!

Are you kidding me? A state law is passed that focuses police on the Latino community- not Arab Americans- not African Americans- JUST Hispanic Americans and your Republican Rep says 'Latino's aren't bothered by this'??? Their more concerned w/ "the economy"...John Boehner would be soooo proud!!

KNPR has the desire to be fair by bringing these rehearsed repub. talking points on every discussion but c'mon let's not allow pure fantasy in the form of Right Wing talking points! Hispanics are angry w/ every right to be so, but more importantly LEGAL immigrants are very, very concerned! The economy is not focusing the Police on Hispanics, this AZ state law is!!

"If you are not from Arizona it is difficult to comprehend the severity of the problem. If you are from Arizona then you recognize that illegal is not a race. We have people illegally crossing our borders from dozens of countries all over the world. It is an issue of economic, physical and national security."

Your Republican guests fails to recognize the fact that the reason Immigration Reform has not moved forward is that not one Republican came to the table to address the issue. Only two Republican votes were needed to move the legislation yet they did not break ranks from the lock-step mentality of demonizing undocumented immigrants.

In the long-run this will benefit Democrats as Hispanics registration will continue to increase and they will run as far away as they can from the Republican party.

    Jose MorenoAug 27, 2010 09:40:24 AM
Don't forget who did not support comprehensive immigration reform in 2006-2007, our own Senator Reid. Democrats don't need Republican support since they have the majority in both chambers. What people must recognize is the it is the Democrats who don't have the votes, because their own caucus wont support it. No excuses, they passed healthcare and bailput with out Republicans, why are they not passing Immigration Reform?
They have had the majority now for three and half years.

Additionally, where is the so call bill we are supposed to support or oppose. Without a proposed bill in congress their nothing to support or oppose. Have the majority democrat congress propose a bill, on either house, then we can say whether we support it or oppose it. Until then, there is no justification and cannot be accusations of lack of support.

You've done your topic an extreme disservice by not having as your guest on this discussion Mr. Miquel Fuentes, political activist, who speaks on the radio station 1340 AM twice a day in Las Vegas. He is a supporter of pro-immigration, and knows the topic very well.
