"What is rape?" Mary-Ann Tirone Smith asked her father when he walked through the door. She was in grade school. She had just read an article about a man who assaulted and murdered her 11-year-old friend. Her father sent her to her room and refused to talk about it. Children were locked inside their homes, and police scoured the town for the perpetrator. In her memoir, Girls of Tender Age, Author Mary-Ann Tirone Smith reflects back on her innocent childhood in Connecticut, how a pedophile changed everything, and why her suppressed memories didn't surface until decades later.

Mary-Ann Tirone Smith speaks with fellow authors Paul Theroux, Peter Hessler and Marnie Mueller on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at UNLV's Beam Music Center Doc Rando Recital Hall.
