AIR DATE: October 7, 2010
LISTEN TO M3U | DOWNLOAD MP3

One of the world's most prolific travel writers, Paul Theroux boasts 7 languages and nearly 50 books under his belt. From Cairo to Cape Town to the South Pacific, Theroux reflects back on a life of railroads and bazaars... and why he finally settled in rural Hawaii. Join us as Paul Theroux describes life as an American surveying the wide, wide world outside... and how things have changed since he started writing 40 years ago.

Paul Theroux speaks with fellow BMI authors Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, Peter Hessler and Marnie Mueller on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at UNLV's Beam Music Center Doc Rando Recital Hall.

    COMMENTS:
I used to enjoy Mr. Theroux's books, but as the years have passed I find him growing ever more cynical. And as I have matured, I find him ever more shallow. Hence, I find myself instead seeking out travel books written in what many consider the golden age of travel, say 1920-1950 or so. Back then an adventure was really an adventure! And while the third world was still impoverished then, it wasn't the grim, sweaty, dark, cruel world Mr. Theroux more often than not portrays.
