Healthcare Co-op: Insurance without the Insurance Companies
Healthcare Co-op: Insurance without the Insurance Companies

Listen
AIR DATE: November 5, 2010

Imagine an insurance plan... without any insurance company. That's the idea behind Access to Healthcare Network, a healthcare co-op that's providing cheaper plans and giving uninsured Nevadans another option. In fact, it claims it's the first nonprofit medical discount plan in America. Members can pay as little as $20 per month. PLUS, a cash-only surgery center that cuts out insurance companies. We talk to the surgeon behind the idea. How does an insurance plan work without a big profit? What do doctors think of it? Who is it helping? Are there any hidden strings? It works in Reno, but will it last in Las Vegas? What do you think is the best alternative to insurance companies?

You can read more about Access to Healthcare Network in the November/December 2010 issue of our station's magazine, Desert Companion.

GUESTS

I had an emergency appendectomy a few years back and was in the hospital for about 24 hours ~ the hospital bill alone was $35,000 and then all the doctor bills rolled in separately!
