Listen
AIR DATE: January 24, 2011

Scientists discovered 34,000-year-old bacteria in Death Valley that was still alive. The bacteria was frozen in salt crystals, and had "hibernated" over the millennia. The scientist who discovered the microorganisms tells us how they survived, what it says about Death Valley, and why it means we might find life on Mars.
