Student Protests in Carson City

Earlier this month about 500 students showed up on the Strip for a rally and march against potential budget cuts at UNLV. Now, students from colleges and universities all over the state are rallying in Carson City to let legislators know they want a fair approach to higher education which includes revenue solutions and less cuts. We'll talk to students from Southern Nevada who are headed up to Carson City for the rally about what higher education means to them.

	Governor Sandoval got elected (not because people wanted low taxes) because Rory Reid was not popular for several reasons. I know Democrats who voted for Sandoval because Rory doesn't have a spine. He didn't say anything different than Sandoval anyway. Plus his father was soooo unpopular, it took Sharron Angle opposing him to win. NV ED –Mar 18, 2011 13:06:23 PM Respond to this comment

	I think that our voters were not well-informed about the impact of keeping taxes low in Nevada at the time that Sandavol was elected. At this point, it's imperative to educate voters about the costs of NOT increasing taxes such as increased costs from social services, prisons, crime, etc when we don't have a decent education system. 	I am a PhD graduate student at the Department of Geoscience of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). We are in the midst of yet another round of budget cuts for the entire higher educational system of Nevada. Currently, Nevada is on the bottom of the list for funding to higher education. Further cuts will dessimate our educational system. The current Governor of Nevada is choosing to correct budget deficits by requiring further cuts to higher education. However, he refuses to raise taxes. Nevada has more Gold Mines than any other state but receives more revenue from the Car Rental Industry taxes. The mining companies have a squeaky clean Governor in their giant pockets. UNLV has already sustained over 50 million in cuts over the past four years. However, our University President has been asked to cut another 40 million in one year. The new budget, devised by the deans of all the colleges campus wide has developed a potential budget with both vertical and horizontal cuts. My department took the largest hit in the College of Sciences. Geoscience is considered expendable and received 36% of the cuts required by the College of Science, we are by far one of the small Melissa Schaar –Mar 16, 2011 17:42:12 PM Respond to this comment
