The Color of Night

AIR DATE: April 22, 2011

Madison Smartt Bell's new novel tells the story of a Las Vegas blackjack dealer. She spends her free time wandering the desert with a rifle, or sitting in her trailer watching replays of an old lover escape the wreckage of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. But her troubles stretch back to the 1960s and even earlier with her abusive childhood.

Dear KNPR, My husband and I are supporters of the radio station. I was dismayed to hear a disparaging comment about dealers on the 04/22/11 State of Nevada program. While Mr. Hernandez has the right to characterize a job as he so chooses, I wish that he had thought more carefully about his words. Dealing is both art and science. Also, I believe the radio station solicits support from gaming companies. Gaming officials would probably be likewise dismayed to know that their employees were disparaged. I do hope that my comments will be related to Mr. Hernandez. Again, I support free speech and public radio, but I encourage reflection before expression. Sincerely, Tammy McMahan
