The Alleged Beating of Mitchell Crooks

On Friday the Las Vegas Review-Journal posted live footage of a police beating. The video comes from a March 20 altercation between videographer Mitchell Crooks, and Metro Police officer Derek Colling.

Colling's police report claims Mitchell Crooks resisted arrest. But Crooks and his attorney say he was filming police from his own property and was well within his rights. The Clark County District Attorney has dropped all charges against Crooks.

We talk with David Otto, Crooks' attorney, about the incident, the video and the complaint against the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

COMMENTS:
The law enforcment in this case responded to the situation with the appropriate amount of initial action. The officer clearly asked if he lived there and the victim responded with a simple answer. "No". The officers were responding to a supposed break-in and here stands a person with a camera for all intensive purposes admitting trespassing. He should have responded more clearly to the officer. I have no sympathy for this man.

"for all intensive purposes admitted trespassing"!!???? No he didn't. The single "no" answer to "do you live here?" doesn't admit trespassing. He could have easily been there with the property owner's permission. For all we know, he could have been at his friend's house (for example) to feed his cat while his friend was on vacation. If officer Colling had been truly interested in whether Mitchell Crooks was trespassing, he would have asked more questions related to why Mitchell Crooks was there. According to the news report, the police were investigating the house across the street. Mitchell Crooks was not interfering with their work. In this video, it is clear that Officer Colling was the aggressor.
