The Walking Philosophers

In his series for Las Vegas City Life, Juan Martinez wanted to test how "pedestrian-unfriendly" Las Vegas really was. The native Colombian talks about how Las Vegas is different than walking in other cities around the world, and the unexpected surprises he found while walking. From a veteran with gangrene to a hidden soda shop and a Mormon fort, Juan Martinez and author Tim O'Grady reflect on walking... and the world we find when we step outside our cars, and slow down our point of view.

COMMENTS:
The older areas were designed for walking. They are bound by arterials that have all the services you need. I live in the Desert Inn/Eastern area in a development that was built in the 1960s. I walk to my cardiologist (he approves!), to the post office, grocery stores, ATM, community center, and others. Yes the sidewalks are not full of people, but that is actually a good thing....I greet those I meet and also enjoy seeing the varied homes and landscapes of a mature residential area. If I want to walk further I can walk to the Pecos walking trail that will eventually circle the city.

There is a walking/volksmarching club in Las Vegas called the Las Vegas High Rollers and Strollers. They have year-round walks throughout the valley and nearby areas, and special events as well. www.lvhrs.org. Sunset Park has added some new walking trails along Eastern, I see people on them all the time. The Pittman Wash trail in Henderson connects to various parks along it's route.

If you're looking for a good place to walk, Henderson has an extensive trail system. You can stay in the city if you'd like, but there are a number that skirt along the edge and allow for a taste of the desert without going too far from home. You can find a map of Henderson trails here: http://cityofhenderson.com/parks/pdf/trail_maps/henderson_trails_map.pdf
