Who is the Better Candidate
Who is the Better Candidate

AIR DATE: June 7, 2011

The election will be held Tuesday and then the city will have a new mayor. But opinion is very sharply divided about who is the better candidate. Some of the leading supporters of both candidates explain why they're backing Carolyn Goodman or Chris Giunchiliani. And we want to hear what you think - so call in or tell us what you think the big issues are and why one candidate is better for the job.
Jim Rogers, former Chancellor, Nevada System of Higher Education and owner, Sunbelt Communications
Sheri Grotheer, northwest resident and grassroots activist
Scott Dickensheets, Ed, Las Vegas CityLife
Steve Friess, freelance journalist
Michael Cornthwaite, downtown businessman

After seeing both candidates on the Channel 3 interviews it appeared Mrs. Goodman acted as if she had the election in the bag.Honestly, this kind of pride is a huge stumbling block with me to vote for her.I refuse to listen to any poll numbers - from any media. I think from watching the county meetings on TV Mrs. Giunchiliani has all the skills she needs to do a great job - and she can even can handle a mistaken word or two - and those who call her on it! The mob seventies are long gone and over. It's time for new blood and to say Thank You Mr Goodman for all you have done for Las Vegas.I believe in the decisions and energy Chris brings to the leadership of Las Vegas.

I think the discussion of being "fast" on your feet when speaking is ridiculous. Take Daley I and II and neither was very articulate by any stretch of the imagination. Yet probably the two strongest and best mayors in the country in the past 50 years.

What has Chris done for the African-American community? She is a charter member of the Clark County Black Caucus, NAACP, and been acknowledged for her commitment to African-American advocacy with the 2009- Human Rights Campaign: Community Ally Award, 2003- Urban Chamber of Commerce Community Enrichment Award, 2002- Profiles in Courage Award, Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice.

This is a complete no-brainer. Chris G. has the goods, Carolyn Goodman doesn't. End of story. In fact, even the Goodman supporters on the show can't make a compelling argument about why Carolyn Goodman would make a good Mayor. I am sick and tired of people like Carolyn Goodman thinking that they can waltz into jobs, especially political positions, that they are woefully unqualified for. And after watching the "citizen politicians" up in Carson City fumble their way through yet another legislative session, I say enough is enough. I want a Mayor who can start the job, day one, with the knowledge and savvy they need to talk smartly and articulately about, as well as act on, the most pressing issues affecting the Las Vegas community, including jobs, development, education and quality of life. As far as I can tell, Goodman is an under-qualified candidate counting on name recognition to garner votes.

I feel as though there are many residents here that are being short changed in "local" races. The person voted in as Mayor affects my life and my business, but yet because I do not live in "Las Vegas", I have no say. I live at Warm Springs and Las Vegas Blvd, that sure does sound like Las Vegas to me...

Even if it is ceremonial, Chris G has way more panache, vitality and personality than Carolyn, who comes off as a bit high and mighty.
    MikeJun 6, 2011 09:45:48 AM
The bottom line is that Chris has the experience, savvy, know-how, dedication, and love for public service to hit the ground running on day one. Carolyn has Oscar's name and throne and that's about all.

Nevada has only one business --- Mining. We mine silver, we mine gold, and best of all we mine stupid. By almost any measure, Las Vegas, and Southern Nevada ranks as one of the most ignorant stupid areas in the country. After almost 100 years, if the people who run this area did not want it to be that it would not be that way, since the people who run this area are themselves not stupid. Now given that, and the demonstrated intellectual abilities of the two candidates, who do you think will win? And by at least 15 points.

    public relations job

Ask why Carolyn and Oscar are having a 49th anniversary bash downtown on election day. While you are at it, ask why Oscar sent out a campaign mailer on tax payer's dime?
    FrankJun 6, 2011 09:37:52 AM
I am so tired of hearing that the mayor's position is purely ceremonial. The mayor represents all of Las Vegas. There are 7 votes and to discount that vote does a disservice to Las Vegans.Carolyn Goodman is lacking in knowledge and has failed to accept invitations to the Latino community for debate-live and through the Latino TV. Las Vegas is more than just downtown. Streets after more than 50 years are lacking in sidewalks and fail to be in compliance with the ADA. Carolyn Goodman touts her lack of experience yet as an administrator she would not hire herself specifically because of her lack of experience. It is not a just a public relations just. We need more. I voted for Chris Guichigliani.
    VicentaJun 6, 2011 09:36:38 AM
I thought Mrs Goodman was advising those interested in same sex marriage should go to a less backward state in search of rights not available here.
    ravenJun 6, 2011 09:35:37 AM
Come on Jim Rogers didn't Chris G file a whistleblower complaint against you when she was with CCSN? You have an axe to grind. Chris G was at UMC to talk to nurses and management was trying to stop her from getting to the bottom of the situation. Dr. Carrison has some problems too.
    MaryJun 6, 2011 09:32:56 AM
This conversation is embarrassing. The best Goodman's supporters can come up with is that she "has a brain between her ears"?
    NickJun 6, 2011 09:28:55 AM
Carolyn is just too worn out to do anything for our city. Her campaign has been lazy doing nothing to earn our votes. I believe that Chris G has the energy to face the challenges ahead. I find it an interesting parallel between Las Vegas and Chicago that for the first time in years the mayor of Chicago is not named Dailey and new energy is happening for that city with Rahm Emmanuel - we can do the same with Las Vegas.
    Christine Jun 6, 2011 09:27:59 AM
We are not a city manager type of government, we are a mayorial type government. If we were a city manager type, then Chris would be great, as a city manager is the perfect type of job for her - more of an administrative/governmental job. However, we have a mayor, and not a city manager. A mayor is not supposed to govern - the mayor is supposed to be a cheerleader for the community. I think Carolyn has proved she can be that kind of mayor - she already has used her connections to bring in the Cleveland Clinic, the Meadows School, etc. which is exactly what her job would be.
    LisaJun 6, 2011 09:21:11 AM
Carolyn can't speak in public very well, as Steve is saying right now. If we want a public figure, Chris G has panache and vitality and can speak in public much more effectively than Carolyn, who comes across as out of touch.
    JustinJun 6, 2011 09:29:22 AM
Carolyn Goodman was successful in building a private school for the wealthiest families in the valley, but what has she done to show that she would be an advocate for average Las Vegans?
    SueJun 6, 2011 09:18:20 AM
Carolyn isn't "out there" during the campaign, so why would we think she would be out there after she is elected? She's refused several debates and community activities. She refused AFAN's walk. She refused school children.
    JustinJun 6, 2011 09:10:39 AM
Without taking any position on the mayoral race itself, I want to voice my opposition to the daily barrage of flyers during the whole campaign and more recently the constant robo-calls we get at our house to the point that my wife could not take a nap on a Sunday afternoon. This is extremely insulting and offensive and I hope it does not portend what's to come in all future elections. This one has been the WORST for it. Most seem to come from Chris G's camp.
