On Friday, the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee released a scathing report on the work of the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory Jazcko. The committee will be holding hearings on allegations on Tuesday. Underlying the allegations, of course, is the wish to re-start Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste repository. We hear what the problems were and what the committee thinks needs to be done to re-start Yucca Mountain.
Yucca Mountain was chosen for political reasons and is bad for Nevada. Since studies began, it has been discovered by DOE and others that waste buried there will contaminate the aquifer beneath that is used by humans and for agricultural purposes. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Greg Jaczko has headed a Commission that, for the first time in many decades, has not been a rubber stamp for the nuclear power industry. He has done nothing illegal or improper and the Commission is now paying more attention to safety and working more democratically. Judy Treichel –Jun 13, 2011 16:17:05 PM
Ms. Treichel, for my edification, name one federal funded program that wasn't "chosen for political reasons" where in the world "waste buried" doesn't contaminate an aquifer, and where in the world water doesn't have to be treated to be potable for humans.
Nuclear waste stored in the proposed containers will never be as big a problem as the residue from dozens, hundreds, of nuclear test explosions in Nevada; that residue is only about 70 years into the thousands of years of life and half-life of the radiation released in those tests. I won't ask where you get your notions, it can't be from Harry Reid, he accepts funds from the nuclear industry. Vernon Clayson –Jun 17, 2011 15:20:25 PM
It is long over due to move this project forward, to negotiate for benefits and bring economic prosperity to rural NV. Only a handful of folks in Clark and Washoe are anti-YMP. The others don't have any information on the topic, and I would guess that a vast majority (6-rural counties) are supportive of the YMP.Cheryl Beeman –Jun 13, 2011 15:14:05 PM
