Mermaids and Mermen

AIR DATE: August 5, 2011

"The Little Mermaid" may have been a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, but for some people, it's the real deal.  We talk to people who perform as mermaids and mermen in aquariums around the world.  How do you swim with a tail encasing your legs?  How do you swim with manatees, sting rays, and sharks?  The mermaid conference, MerCon, comes to The Silverton on Aug. 12-13.  We talk to a former Olympic synchronized swimmer, a former Shamu trainer, and a mermaid costume designer about what life under the sea is really like.

GUESTS
Heather Carrasco, mermaid, Silverton Casino
Eric Ducharme, merman and The MerTailor; on Facebook
Melissa Dawn ("Mermaid Melissa"), Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

COMMENTS:
I just talked to someone on the phone who is out looking for MerCon today (Saturday Aug 13, 2011). Different websites mentioned both the Mirage and Silverton for the event location, so they went to both places and found nothing. They talked to someone who said there was a little bit of a show on Friday, and then the conference organizer left town. Do you know any more about it?
