The discussion began with and followed an unbiblical definition of tithing. While money was essential to biblical worship, money was never a tithed item. True holy biblical tithes were always only food which had been miraculously increased by God Himself from inside His special holy land of Israel. This is the definition used by Moses in Lev 27 and Num 18, Malachi in chapter 3, and Jesus and in Matthew 23. The biblical use of the holy tithe never changed away from food. Therefore your basic premise is wrong. God never allowed Israel to tithe food increased from outside Israel. And God never commanded Gentiles or Christians to tithe. According to First Timothy 5:8, the Christians first duty is to care for the necessities of his own family. Having said that, most of us live far above out basic necessities and should cut back in order to help others. God judges nations in accordance to the way they treat the poor. Sacrificial giving is the key but even that depends upon common sense (wisdom). I like what the Jewish commentator said the best.

Malachi 3 was quoted. However, consider Malachi 3:7 (KJV) Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ORDINANCES, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Then look at Colossians 2:14 (KJV) Blotting out the handwriting of ORDINANCES that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; The Biblical tithe was nailed to the cross. NO CURSE TODAY: Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us& WE ARE ALREADY BLESSED WITH ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS Ephesians 1:3 (KJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: FALLEN FROM GRACE Galatians 5:4 (KJV) Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Those who use Malachi as their reason for tithing has fallen from grace. Furthermore, the Biblical tithe was FOOD from crops and animals, NOT money or on income. Yet the Temple Tax had to be paid with money.

In addition, Malachi was sent by God with a message directed to the priests of Israel who were breaking God's ordinances, and not to the people.

It is my experience that when I pay tithing and make other donations --- there are significant blessings attached. I always come out ahead, even though the "math" doesn't add up.
