Waddie Mitchell, Cowboy Poet
Waddie Mitchell, Cowboy Poet

Listen
AIR DATE: November 16, 2011

Waddie Mitchell didn't start out wanting to be a cowboy poet.  Storytelling was just a part of life on the ranch - every cowboy writes poetry, he says.  But once he appeared with his trademark hat and thick moustache on Johnny Carson and Larry King, the label of "cowboy poet" stuck.  But the fame was just a by-product, Waddie says.  For him, poetry was an outlet - a way to escape when he returned from the Vietnam War.  Waddie Mitchell will be honored Nov. 17 by the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame.  He joins us to talk about calving, where he writes his poems, PTSD, and why he'll always live off the grid.
