The congressional "super committee" charged with cutting the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion over ten years is fast approaching a November 23 deadline. If the bi-partisan committee doesn't reach a deal, automatic across the board spending cuts will start in 2013. UNR Economics Chair, Elliot Parker recently traveled to Washington D.C. to speak with Democratic lawmakers about the debt deal. Elliot Parker joins us to discuss whether or not congress can agree on a deal and what it might look like.

    The trouble with this whole balanced budget is that we have politicians snarling over pieces of meat [programs] Rather- just trim some obvious fat: Sorry Senators, Congressmen, Government employees....no more bottled water, coffee, limos, 4 Seasons hotel stays. Gotta go to Budget Suites from now on. These little pieces will add up nicely and go a long way to saving money.Taxpayers have to let our politicians know we can no longer afford to roll out the red carpet for them.

    Why aren't we investing in new--or for that matter, not-so-new--technologies? Nevada is one of only TWO states in the entire nation without a four year program in web design, for instance. I also find any talk of "reallocating funds" to be a horrifying prospect when we've already slashed so many programs that were honestly already in need of additional funds.

    What about construction workers migrating to the renewable energy sector. I mean living here in Nevada I can attest to a heavy electric bill during hot summers. A lot of houses can use solar panels to reduce our energy bills and help reduce our footprint. Why are we as a city and state not taking advantage of this natural resource?
