The freeways are being widened and McCarran has a new terminal but does that cover Las Vegas infrastructure needs? Could new roads and railroads really strengthen the economy in Southern Nevada? And what else will diversify the kind of business that is carried on in Nevada?

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, which is usually opposed to new government spending, is a convert to the idea that we need to re-think the infrastructure needs of Las Vegas. Who converted the members? Urban Studies Professor and Director of Brookings Mountain West Robert Lang. He joins us to discuss the long-term development of the economy in Southern Nevada.

GUEST
Robert Lang, Urban Studies, UNLV and Dir, Brookings Mountain West

COMMENTS:
GET A LEADER TO CHAMPION THIS EFFORT. Committees and politicians cannot make it happen, but can help a dynamic leader. Money and legislation will be wasted if committees are put in charge of anything. You invested a lot of money in the report, so why not invest a little more into someone who can get it done. Prioritize the recommendations and implement. It has not happened before with these plans, so why not make this the first?

Dr. Lang suffers from what free market economists call the "pretense of knowledge", i.e. that he (and politicians/bureaucrats) absolutely KNOW best what government should do, and what the economy should or will do, and even what individuals should or will do. That is a totally incorrect premise, which is why ALL statist central planners ALWAYS fail miserably (ala the USSR, communist China, etc.). How about presenting the alternative story? Myself, I thought nearly every point he made was highly questionable at best, and clearly wrong most of the time. This show should have been structured as a debate/discussion, not a mindless propaganda-fest!

I will agree that free market economists are extremely well versed in "the pretense of knowledge" - they are experts at it!

Awesome guest. Is there anyone who can provide equally lucid counterpoints to Dr. Lang?
