The Smith Center for The Performing Arts opens its doors this weekend with a black tie gala to celebrate the debut of one of downtown Las Vegas' biggest cultural and redevelopment project. The center is the cornerstone of Symphony Park which developers say will eventually include residences, a casino hotel and other projects.
 
But, while there are big plans for development, the Las Vegas Sun reports most of those developments are still only on paper and it could take years to build the area to its full potential. We talk with the President of the Smith Center about this week's opening and the future of Symphony Park.

    Yes, it is wonderful the Smith Center is opening ! My hopes are that beyond the wonderful progrms they are promoting is that the education proposed component becomes a wonderful success. This can start with people attending the April 11th concert featuring local musicians in 'Sousa in the 21st Century', a community concert in Support of Arts Education in Clark County.     The title of the program should be "Curtain RISES..." not RAISES. I would expect correct language usage from knpr; where's your script editor?

    Didn't the City of WPB condemn and purchase a massive block of land surrounding the Kravis Center? As I recall it was ~ 2 square miles.
