Paycheck Fairness Act: Do Women Get Equal Pay
Paycheck Fairness Act: Do Women Get Equal Pay

Listen
AIR DATE: June 13, 2012

In the 21st century, women are still paid less than men: 77 cents, on average, to every dollar for men.  Why is there still a wage gap?  Why did the Paycheck Fairness Act - which was intended to level the paycheck field - fail in the Senate?  And why did all the Republicans vote against it?  Are you a working woman, and are you being paid less than your male counterparts?  What's holding you back?  And what progress should (or shouldn't) we expect to see on Capitol Hill?  Share your story below.

GUEST
Lisa Maatz, Dir of Public Policy and Govt relations, American Association of University Women
Matt Unrath, National Program Dir, Wider Opportunities for Women
Jeff Waddoups, Prof of Economics, UNLV

How about this simple solution: if one likes the rate of pay offered, accept the job. If not, get a different job. This idea that there is a "just" rate of pay for a given job is economic claptrap... the "just" rate of pay is simply that which is both offered by employers and accepted by employees, i.e. it is part of a contract agreed to by both parties, and will vary according the the varying needs and wants of both parties.

This subject was extremely well covered with knowledgeable guest speakers -- one of the best feature stories I have heard yet from KNPR. I believe that was Louis Hernandez, a very indepth journalist unafraid of asking the probing and provocative questions. THANK YOU KNPR ! ! !

Did the prof from UNLV say that the wage gap for women in their 20's are making *just* 5% less than men in their 20's? 5% is real money! And that compounds over time!

I had to chuckle when the story right after this one was about a female judge who is under scrutiny for giving her juries special instructions when her job interferes with her personal plans. Things that make you go 'Hmmmmm.'

Look at the salaries of school police officers vs school teachers. That pretty much says it all. Here's a link, if that's helpful: http://www3.8newsnow.com/salaries2010/?agency=ccsd&type=benefits&limit=50&q=wri&t= Think about the value of the work of police officers, firefighters and teachers, and the amount of education each job requires, as well as the difficulties and stresses of their jobs. Are police officers and firefighters really worth SO MUCH MORE than teachers? Or do they get paid so much more because they are, historically, men's jobs?
