The United States Supreme Court has given its answer on Arizona's SB1070 - the law that requires police to check the immigration status of people they suspect of being in the country illegally. Now Assemblyman Ira Hansen is asking for a similar bill to be prepared for the 2013 session of the legislature. Hansen tells us why he thinks Nevada needs its own law to check on immigrants legal status and how he assesses the chances of it passing.

COMMENTS:
Ira Hansens proposal for a similar law to Arizonas SB1070 is not what Nevada needs. I disagree with implementing a law that is so flawed mainly because it allows room for discrimination. How exactly will police officials decide who seems suspicious of being an undocumented immigrant? Nobody can deny that the federal government has been ignoring dealing with immigration. Yes we should have laws that protect our nation but it seems that people are using this as a reason to target Latinos. Hansen says, Well now you look at most of the trades are dominated by Hispanics and a good percentage of them I suspect are illegal. This and the mariachi music remark reflect the hostile attitudes Latinos are facing due to the portrayal of their culture being used to indicate illegal. So is the proposal for an SB1070-like law right for Nevada? No. Nevada is known for its diversity and dependency on tourism (for Southern Nevada). This would only bring antagonism and portray Nevada as an unwelcoming state.
