Controversial Gun Range to Open at Palazzo Shoppes
Controversial Gun Range to Open at Palazzo Shoppes

Listen
AIR DATE: July 16, 2012

The Shoppes at the Palazzo host a number of high-end stores like Burberry, Fendi, and Salvatore Ferragamo.  And now, it might have its own gun range.  Italian gunmaker Beretta is planning on opening a 19,000 square foot gun store and firing range inside the Palazzo mall.  The Clark County Planning Commission approved the permit, 4-1, but lawyers for the Venetian and Wynn resorts claim mixing guns, alcohol, and close quarters is a "tragedy waiting to happen."

GUESTS
Greg Borgel, consultant and representative, Beretta gun store
Ron Reese, Sr VP of Govt Affairs, Las Vegas Sands
Fred Kraus, legal counsel, Venetian Resorts
Greg Esposito, Clark County Planning Commission

The Silverton has a HUGE gun shop and range and a casino connected (Bass Pro Shops) I dont think they have had any problems.

I just don't see the problem here. Some people want to shoot guns, guns are legal, shooting ranges are legal, and any potential harm to the public will be factored into the liability insurance the range operator takes out. I'd guess that those opposing this legitimate business venture simply don't want their competitors to have something they don't have (or perhaps even want); they are, in short, trying to use the force of government to benefit themselves and harm their competition - certainly not a legitimate function of government.
