Revisiting Fast and Furious
Revisiting Fast and Furious

AIR DATE: August 21, 2012

The investigation into Fast and Furious, the federal operation where guns were allegedly sent over the Mexican border by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents, had a big turn this week. The House Oversight Committee on Monday filed a civil lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder demanding he turn over documents related to the failed operation. So what's next for Fast and Furious? Fronteras: Changing America Desk reporter, Michel Marizco has followed the story and he joins us to talk about the latest.

To assume that the Obama administration carried out the Fast & Furious operation as a Machiavellian plot to indict American gun shop owners in the minds of the public and gin up support for re-imposition of the Clinton 1994 assault weapons ban is to assume some things that are extremely unlikely. The first one of those assumptions that does not hold water is that this administration is competent and capable of carrying out such a plan. Also, when the program was known as Wide Receiver, under President Bush from 2006 to 2007 the same idiotic tactics were being used. If one has a choice between a nefarious plot and simple incompetence, choose incompetence every time and you won't be disappointed.

How about we hear about the Truth about the partisan Republican political charges about Fast and Furious? Read Katherine Eban's investigative piece in Fortune, which KNPR links, and you learn that there WAS NO GUN RUNNING. The guns that made their way to Mexico and killed our ATF agent were LEGAL purchases bought by LEGAL purchasers. Eric Holder and President Obama are not to blame. Those who wanted loose gun laws are responsible for these purchases.
