Will Water Shortages Make Us Vegetarians?
Will Water Shortages Make Us Vegetarians?

Listen
AIR DATE: August 30, 2012

New scientific reports suggest that global population growth and continuing shortages of water will make us all vegetarians. That's inevitable, say the water experts, because only grain will provide enough food. So what would our daily diets look like? And would it be the end of fine dining in destinations like Las Vegas? Could we make the adjustment if meat became a real luxury?

GUESTS
Al Mancini, restaurant critic, Las Vegas CityLife
Rick Moonen, RM Seafood
Peggy Neu, President, Meatless Mondays

Of course, the *real* root problem is the number of people on the planet, yet, sadly, people from across the political spectrum all insist on having more and more children. Bottom line, anyone who cares about the environment, but had kids, is a hypocrite.

Thank you for a worthwhile discussion. We can no longer ignore what is happening to our earth's resources. After all, we will be eventually handing it all over to our descendants one day. I have made the switch to a plant-based diet, primarily for ethical reasons, but I also feel better about not contributing to the earth's destruction by supporting factory farming.

Thank you for discussing this. I'm vegetarian mainly for animal rights, but I also feel healthier and it's WAY better for the environment too! Water shortage or not, using animals is a waste of resources and life.
