Paralympian Marlon Shirley Never Stopped Competing
Paralympian Marlon Shirley Never Stopped Competing

AIR DATE: September 12, 2012

Marlon Shirley says missing a leg never stopped him from wanting to compete at a higher level. Shirley is the previous world record holder in the 100-meter amputee race. His record also includes gold medals in the Sydney and Athens Paralympics. Yet, it wasn't easy for Shirley. The son of a drug addicted mother, he was abandoned at the age of 3 and bounced through the foster system before reaching the pinnacle of Paralympic competition. Marlon Shirley joins us to tell his story.

I was listening to NPR this morning between 5am and 6am and Marlon Shirley interview came on the Outlook on NPR. His story has a fabulous outcome. God bless him. I could empathise and sympathise with his story. I also love track and field. And I also have a bicultural son. I would love for my son to meet him one day. My son would get inspiration from him knowing that another bicultural male has followed his passion and elevated greatly. Long Island is very complex of demographics. And, I instill in my son to keep faith in God greatly and a belief to succeed with simultaneous appreciation for what blessings God has bestowed him. I pray God will continue to look upon marlon shirley's biological family and surrogate family. I pray God will continue to bless Marlon Shirley-with peace, happiness, and success. If Marlon is not too busy-I hope will respond to this e-mail and can meet my son, as well as many children to give them encouragement.
