The Daily Rundown - November 26th, 2025

🍗 Around Thanksgiving, many family cooks are thinking about turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce — or perhaps, for our longtime NPR listeners, the late Susan Stamberg’s famous cranberry relish. But not everyone. The fall holidays in the U.S. include a wide variety of traditions — some tied to cultural heritage and others particular to individual families.

A group of foodies from a variety of backgrounds shared their customs for this time of year, along with their thoughts on Thanksgiving more generally. One thing they all had in common? Encouraging people to learn more about the history behind the dishes they put on their tables. Hear the full conversation.

⚖️ Henderson City Councilwoman Carrie Cox yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of secretly recording fellow Councilwoman Dr. Monica Larson and two others without their consent inside Henderson City Hall. Cox told Senior Judge David Barker that she waived the right to a trial within 60 days. On Monday, Cox was censured by the Henderson City Council for that and other possible misdeeds following her indictment by a grand jury.

City of Henderson

Following the censure, Cox will be removed from all regional boards and commissions and is restricted from interacting with most city employees. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Public Integrity Unit was called in to investigate the recording incident and discovered the recording in Cox's iCloud data. They also uncovered other possible misconduct, including using her position to help friends having legal issues with the city and operating an unlicensed daycare center.

🐶 The Nevada SPCA is holding its annual Black Friday “Adopt Til You Drop" event this Friday, waiving adoption fees for cats and dogs ages 6 months and older, as well as for smaller mammals. There may be a $10 license fee, depending on where you live. Adopters will go through the usual adoption process, the organization says, and dogs, cats, and rabbits are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. They will be closed tomorrow and open on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. More information is available here.

🧊 The number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees at Nevada's detention centers has surged by over 30 percent since September, according to the latest data from the agency. As of November 20, ICE is holding 554 people per day in Southern Nevada detention centers — an increase of about 100 people held daily compared to September. The increase is even more dramatic at the Washoe County Jail in Northern Nevada, where the daily number of ICE detainees has nearly tripled since September.

This growth comes as ICE considers creating a new detention facility in the state. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hinted at expansion, with the Washington Post reporting that a “soft-side” (tent) facility could be constructed at the Nevada Southern Detention Center. This increase places significant pressure on the center, which is already exceeding its contracted limit of 250 ICE detainees by more than 210 people.

💰 A federal judge has ruled against Kalshi, a financial exchange platform, forcing it to at least temporarily stop offering sports contracts in Nevada. U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon sided with the Nevada Gaming Control Board, dissolving a preliminary injunction that had allowed Kalshi to operate since April despite a state cease-and-desist order.

The judge reasoned — as he did in an earlier Crypto.com case — that event contracts centered on outcomes of sporting events are not swaps and therefore don’t fall within the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s jurisdiction, as these prediction markets claim in an effort to avoid gaming licensing. Kalshi will likely appeal the ruling.
