Lopsided cannon clash, new school-zone safety push, and a historic December to Remember

UNLV keeps the Fremont Cannon in a 42-17 win against UNR, CCSD Police launch a new school-zone safety push, and the Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum prepares for a December to remember.

The Daily Rundown - December 1st, 2025

🚨 The Clark County School District Police Department is holding a school zone safety campaign today through Friday, an enforcement effort aimed at cracking down on impaired and distracted drivers while promoting roadway safety, the agency said in a press release. The department received a $10,000 grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, which it said will allow officers to “conduct targeted overtime enforcement in areas where unsafe driving behaviors continue to endanger students.”

Since the start of the school year, 180 students have been struck by vehicles while traveling to or from school. Four of those students died. Police said distraction, speeding and impaired driving remain the leading contributors to serious and fatal crashes on Nevada roadways.

🧯 The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has scheduled prescribed fire operations beginning today through March 31, according to a press release. In Southern Nevada, that includes roughly 418 acres of pile burning for a habitat improvement project in the Wheeler Well area along Wheeler Pass Road, about 10 miles northeast of Pahrump.

Prescribed fire is used to reduce vegetation to help protect communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. The Forest Service notifies county emergency management officials when burning begins and posts updates on its website. Boise State Public Radio's Murphy Woodhouse looked to the efficacy of prescribed burning as a means to help reduce wildfire severity.

🏈 College football rivalry week was a lopsided affair in Nevada. UNLV defeated UNR 42–17 in the battle for the Fremont Cannon. The win also secured UNLV a spot in the Mountain West championship game, giving the Rebels a chance to avenge this season’s loss to Boise State. Because of that regular-season loss, Boise State will host the title game.

Player health will be something to watch for both teams: Boise State has played without starting quarterback Maddux Madsen for the past two games due to injury, while UNLV’s lead running back, Jai’Den Thomas, has been managing hamstring soreness — though he still scored four touchdowns in the rivalry game. Hear the story leading up to the game with KNPR's Paul Boger.

🖼️ The Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum has joined the national Museums for All program, an initiative designed to reduce financial barriers and encourage regular museum visits. Starting today, individuals and families who receive SNAP food assistance can visit for a discounted admission of $5 per person (for up to four people) with presentation of their EBT card.

The program aligns with the museum’s goal of expanding access to science and natural history learning experiences across Southern Nevada. Its launch coincides with the museum’s annual holiday exhibition, “A December to Remember: Celebrating Culture & Community,” which features cultural displays, performances and hands-on winter science activities. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With drinking and congestion both elevated, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and partnering law enforcement agencies conducted a DUI blitz in response. Officers made 818 traffic stops, resulting in 38 DUI arrests. This is the second year the blitz has been held in honor of Sgt. Abbate and Trooper Felix, who were killed by an impaired driver on Nov. 30, 2023.
