✈️ A United Airlines plane safely returned to Harry Reid International Airport Saturday night after an airline passenger wrote a text message stating he was going to hijack the plane.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they arrested the man on charges of making a threat or providing false information regarding an act of terrorism.

These charges carry a possible sentence of one to 20 years in prison. He is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The red-eye flight was headed to Newark, New Jersey, and was diverted less than an hour after departing.

💵 The Las Vegas Valley has one of the lowest quality-of-life ratings in North America for affordability, according to new analysis.

First reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Numbeo, a website that lets users compare the cost of living in cities worldwide, ranked the Las Vegas Valley 66th out of 73 cities considered. It scored below average on virtually all ranking metrics, with its lowest score in property price relative to income.

The report used data through mid-2026. The valley beat only seven cities, including Los Angeles, Detroit, New York and Phoenix, as well as Regina, Winnipeg and Hamilton, Canada.

Ottawa, Canada, was the top city in North America, followed by Tampa, Florida; Oklahoma City; and Tucson, Arizona. Similar analysis from Realtor.com gave Nevada a “C-” for housing affordability and homebuilding.

Since the pandemic, home prices in most of Southern Nevada have grown exponentially. By contrast, wage growth across the state has largely remained stagnant since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

🏫 Most parents consider a quality education for their children a top priority, but Nevada public schools have long struggled to help students read, write and do math proficiently.

According to the most recent test scores, fewer than half of students in third through eighth grade were proficient in English Language Arts. Fewer than 40% of students in third through eighth grade were proficient in math.

As for the schools themselves, despite posting improvements during the 2024-25 school year, the number of 5-star schools, the best rating, across the state declined, while the number of one-star schools, the worst rating, increased.

So, what will it take to see improvements?

According to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford, bringing the state's annual average per-pupil funding amount in line with the national average.

Gubernatorial candidates say reducing student debt for educators and upping funding are two possible solutions to flagging test scores.

"Money is important, period, point blank," Ford said. "The fact that we are so far behind on the national average demonstrates continued work that we need to do and commit ourselves to doing on a consistent basis."

For Republican incumbent Gov. Joe Lombardo, funding is also key to hiring and keeping high-quality teachers in the classroom. Hear the full conversation with KNPR's Paul Boger here.

🧪 The Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging residents to use its free consumer lead testing service to identify potential hazards in their homes. Kitchenware is the most common category of items testing positive for hazardous levels of lead exposure.

Residents can bring household items as well as toys to the Health District’s Main Public Health Center every Monday for free testing, and an appointment is not necessary.

The action is part of an effort recognizing this week as National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week [Oct. 25-31], which emphasizes learning about lead hazards, especially in children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Officials say lead exposure often occurs without obvious symptoms. And prevention and early identification of potential sources are critical.

🎤 The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Monday night that Jay-Z will be the featured performer for the halftime festivities on Feb. 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had one request when the league first reached an agreement with Roc Nation: that Jay-Z take the stage himself "whenever the moment felt right to him."

"From 'Reasonable Doubt' to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey," Jay-Z said in a statement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."

After days of speculation, Jay-Z is set to return to the stadium where he closed his celebration of the 30th anniversary of "Reasonable Doubt," the mogul's 1996 debut album. The concerts included three sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium and sold-out performances in London and Paris ahead of a stop at SoFi Stadium over the weekend.

Jay-Z's Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL since 2019 to advise on and help produce the league's entertainment presentations, including the Super Bowl halftime show. Read the full story and more here.
