Appeals Court Denies Attempt To Block Reno-Sparks Bypass
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Opponents of a major road bypass project linking southeast Reno to Sparks have lost another bid to block the Southeast Connector.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports a federal appeals court late last week turned down an emergency request for an injunction that would have halted construction of the 4.5-mile roadway.
The Upper South East Communities Coalition clams the project could increase flood danger to nearby neighborhoods, impact sensitive wetlands and cause mercury contamination.
Regional Transportation Commission executive director Lee Gibson says construction will continue even as the appeal is considered in federal court.
The coalition is appealing a June 3 decision by a federal judge in its lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers, which gave the commission a permit to build through a wetland area.
