Flood Causes $400K Damage To 3 Sparks Schools

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Washoe County school officials say the recent flash flooding caused about $400,000 damage to three schools in northeast Sparks.

Facilities management officer Chris Cobb says Reed High School and Whitehead and Moss elementary schools all were hit by what he described as a 100-year flood on June 30.

School Board President John Mayer told the Reno Gazette-Journal they're lucky it occurred during the summer break when no students were around.

The most damage was at Whitehead where rushing floodwater breached doorways and window frames and left a quarter-inch of silt and mud in a dozen classrooms and part of the library. The cleanup and repair is expected to cost $300,000.

The only damage at the other two schools was to the exterior.

All repairs are expected to be completed by July 27.
