UNR's Historic Manzanita Hall Closed For Earthquake Fears

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Officials at the University of Nevada, Reno have changed their minds about letting students live this fall in a century-old dormitory that needs retrofitting to withstand earthquakes.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported Friday that about 100 students who planned to live at Manzanita Hall are being transferred elsewhere.

At one point, the school had planned to demolish the brick residence hall constructed in 1895 as well as Lincoln Hall, built a year later.

The latest plan had been to keep Manzanita Hall open through the coming school year before the planned remodeling.

Neighboring Pine Hall also was scheduled to be torn down in the coming months to make way for a new residence hall.

But UNR officials say instead, it will be reopened with room for about 150 students.
