CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada colleges are getting more than $1 million in federal grants to help retain students who might otherwise drop out.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced the awards Monday, saying they would ensure Nevada students from all walks of life have a shot at lasting academic success.
The University of Nevada, Reno will get nearly $350,000 to help 175 students, mostly from low-income or first-generation college backgrounds.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas will get more than $330,000 to help about 260 students with financial literacy and course selection advice. The school will also get another $220,000 to focus on students majoring in science, technology and math.
The College of Southern Nevada will receive nearly $250,000 to help about 200 low-income and first-generation students.
