Containment Expected Soon In Remote Nevada Canyon Wildfire

FALLON, Nev. (AP) — Firefighters expect containment this weekend of a lightning-sparked wildfire that has charred more than 6 square miles of pinyon-juniper trees and grass in a rugged and remote north-central Nevada canyon.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Lisa Ross reported Thursday that the fire was about 90 percent contained in the Desatoya Mountain Range some 50 miles east of Fallon.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened or burned since the fire was reported Aug. 14.

Ross says about 200 firefighters are carving fire breaks, aided by two helicopters and bulldozers.

Motorists were asked to avoid old Highway 50, the Carrol Summit Highway, between East Gate and Austin.

Ross says the fire has burned some sage grouse habitat and priority habitat areas.
