Zika Reported In Washoe County

Health officials say they've confirmed the first case of the Zika virus in Washoe County.

The Washoe County Health District said Monday that a woman who had recently traveled to El Salvador tested positive for Zika. She was one of 12 people in the county who were tested for the illness in recent weeks, and is the only one so far to get a positive result.

Clark County has reported two cases of Zika recently in people who traveled to Latin America.

Zika can spread through mosquito bites, but also through sex and from a mother to her baby during her pregnancy.

Most people who catch Zika only experience mild symptoms such as fever, but it's also been linked to a spike in babies born with abnormally small heads.
