Elko's Enhanced 911 System Hits Possible Stumbling Block

Elko's enhanced 911 system may face a new stumbling block.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the county's plans to implement enhanced 911 is more or less in place, but a new bill before the state legislature may impact its source of funding.

Senate Bill 176 would mandate the state's law enforcement agencies to equip police officers with body cameras, and the money to fund the project would come from the 911 surcharge counties collect.

The Elko county commission has expressed concern to lawmakers that they don't want anything to impact or divert their approved 911 surcharge.

Under the provisions of SB 176, counties could increase the surcharge by up to $1 to pay for the cameras.

Elko County's surcharge currently sits at a quarter on every phone bill.
