Trustees of the Elko County School District voted to buy out the contracts of 24 employees.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports the buyouts will cost the district just under $1 million, but will save almost twice that over the next five years.
Two kinds of buyouts were on offer – one for employees under 60 years old who had already purchased a two-year buyout, and one for employees where the district would be better off buying out their contracts.
The vice president of the Elko County Teachers Association said her organization supported the buyouts, as did some trustees who themselves had sought and received buyouts when they were teaching.
However, some trustees were skeptical of the move.
They argued the savings incurred were not certain, and that the district may not end up saving as much money as it is projecting to.
