Sandoval Stands By Read By Grade 3

Governor Brian Sandoval is defending a law known as “Read by Grade 3” that was implemented during the 2015 Legislative session, despite recent criticisms by the Washoe County School District.

The law requires schools to keep a child in the third grade if they are not reading at grade level.

The priority came with $30 million in new funding initially, and a total of more than $44 million in the governor’s latest budget, but the district is insisting it’s not enough.

The Reno Gazette Journal reportsSandoval said yesterday that Read by Grade 3 should be a priority for every district. The governor’s comments were in response to public statements the district has made about unfunded and underfunded mandates being part of the problem is it faces a $40 million budget deficit.
