Nevada Senate Approves Indigenous Peoples Day, Other Native American Legislation
(Carson City) -- Senators voted unanimously to pass SB 105, which requests Gov. Sandoval proclaim August 9 as Indigenous Peoples Day.
But that's not the only piece of legislation related to Native Americans lawmakers passed this week.
SB 83 would reform the powers of the Nevada Indian Commission, allowing it to work with and between tribes & state agencies.
SB 399 would allow certain state and local government entities to accept ID cards issued by tribes.
That bill explicitly prohibits the DMV from rejecting those cards as proper forms of identification.
It comes after two tribes in Nevada filed a voting-rights lawsuit last year, citing voter ID complications that could obstruct access to polls and discourage participation.
