LAS VEGAS (AP) — Complaints of a lack of diversity, a lack of cultural understanding and subjective grading were brought before Southern Nevada Health District officials during a meeting called by the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce on behalf of members who own restaurants but feared retaliation if they themselves complained.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Asian Chamber's Board of Directors Member Bill Wong said Tuesday members feel discriminated against in part because health inspectors often come without translators.
County commissioners Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Chris Giunchigliani agree with Wong on hiring inspectors from a variety of ethnicities and bringing in translators to make sure restaurant owners understand the issues with their kitchens.
Health inspector Marissa Stanley says a common problem she and her colleagues see are improper hand-washings.
